SAN DIEGO –– A Caltrans employee died early this morning after losing control of his department pickup truck and hitting an embankment along a stretch of eastbound Interstate 8 near the community of In-Ko-Pah.
The California Highway Patrol’s (CHP) Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team was on the scene to learn more about the solo fatal collision involving Caltrans Structures Construction Division employee Oscar Vargas, 54, of Chula Vista.
According to the CHP, there were no passengers in the truck. The incident took place this morning at about 3:30.
Mr. Vargas is survived by his wife Maria and two adult children, Oskar and Christian. He served the state for 29 years at Caltrans, most recently as a Transportation Civil Engineer.
“This is devastating news. Oscar Vargas was a well-liked co-worker and friend to many employees in the Department. Our hearts and thoughts go out to his family,” said Caltrans District 11 Director Laurie Berman.
