Ramp Meters on SR-56 to be Activated

SAN DIEGO – Caltrans recently completed a ramp meter installation project on every eastbound and westbound on-ramp on State Route 56 between Interstate 5 and Interstate 15.   The ramp meters will be activated in stages starting in early May with complete activation by the end of the month. The westbound meters have a window operating time of 5:30-9:30 a.m. and the eastbound meters 3-7 p.m.

Advanced warning signs will be posted at the ramps at least one week prior to activation.  Twenty-four hours before activation the meter’s green light will be illuminated.   The first set of ramp meters to be activated is westbound at Carmel Creak Road and Carmel County Road on Wednesday, May 7.  The advanced warning sign will be posted Tuesday, April 29; the green light illumination will be Tuesday, May 6; with full activation on May 7.  The first set of eastbound meters to be activated is at El Camino Real, Carmel Creek Road, Carmel County Road and Carmel Valley Road on May 14. The last meter to be activated is westbound at Rancho Penasquitos Boulevard on May 28.

The meters will work in conjunction with the three existing meters on the route.  Traffic engineers will monitor the traffic patterns for few a months and calibrate the meters as required.  Once the meters have been re-calibrated, the activation will be dependent on traffic flow in the main lanes.

More information on ramp meters can be found at the Caltrans District 11 website at http://www.dot.ca.gov/dist11/ads/RampMeterBrochure2011.pdf
