Construction Begins This Week on I-805 Auxiliary Lane Project in National City

SAN DIEGO –Construction is scheduled to begin on Interstate 805 (I-805) at East Plaza Boulevard in National City this week.  Drivers can expect to see temporary freeway lane and ramp closures, detours, reduced shoulder and lane widths, the installation of temporary concrete safety barriers (k-rail), temporary lane restriping, and construction equipment and signs.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time and anticipate possible traffic delays.  Motorists are also urged to slow and move over a lane if safe to do so when highway workers are present.  Not only is it the law, it also helps to save lives.

The I-805 East Plaza Boulevard Auxiliary Lane Project will widen the interstate to accommodate the addition of a northbound auxiliary lane and a southbound outside through lane. The northbound auxiliary lane will be approximately one-half mile in length, extending between State Route 54 and East Plaza Boulevard. The southbound outside through lane will begin just north of the East Plaza Boulevard on-ramp and extend approximately one-half mile south.

The project also includes reconstruction of the southbound I-805 on-ramp at East Plaza Boulevard and the installation of a southbound on-ramp meter.

Construction crews will work to minimize impacts to nearby businesses, residents, and commuters.

The new auxiliary and outside through lane are designed to extend the merging distance between on- and off-ramps. The new lanes will accommodate the maneuvering of entering and exiting traffic at this location and improve overall freeway flow along I-805 in South County.

The work is part of the first phase of the I-805 South Express Lanes Project, a $1.1 billion effort to create a modern, new transportation backbone that will meet the future needs of travelers in the region. When finished, the project will offer new transportation choices, relieve traffic congestion, and improve the quality of life in South County.
