State highway workers from the region will gather to pay tribute to the men and women who have died in the line of duty as part of the 22nd Annual California Highway Workers Memorial Day.

OPPORTUNITY
This annual event will feature a memorial display of 178 orange highway cones to signify each of the Caltrans workers killed statewide since 1924. This year's ceremony will include three cones signifying the loss of Stephen Palmer Sr., Jaime Obeso and Richard Gonzalez who lost their lives last summer along highways in San Diego and Imperial counties. Featured speakers include Caltrans District Director Laurie Berman, Statewide Caltrans Division Chief of Maintenance Tony Tavares and California Highway Patrol Assistant Chief Robert Clark. Highway workers who have been involved in close calls on the highways and a Spanish-speaking spokesperson will be available for interviews.
