SR-111 Closed On East Side Of Salton Sea For Four Days Starting This Friday

El Centro, CA -- State Route 111 (SR-111)  on the east side of the Salton Sea between the communities of Mecca and Niland will be closed to through traffic for four days starting this Friday at 7 a.m.

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) first released information regarding the upcoming full-highway closure 10 days ago to alert motorists, including commercial truckers, that they must take State Route 86 on the east side of the Salton Sea during this time as a detour around the work.

“Residents, business owners and visitors to the Bombay Beach area will still have access from the north on Route 111,” said Caltrans Information Officer Hayden Manning.  “All others need to give themselves extra time to take the required detour to SR-86.”

SR-111 will be impassable south of Bombay Beach as highway workers demolish an aged bridged and replace it with a double-box culvert and newly-paved roadway at a cost of about $1 million.  SR-111 is expected to be re-opened to traffic on Tuesday, Dec. 11 at 7 a.m.
