Unique Safety Project on Westbound I-8 at Hotel Circle
SAN DIEGO – Caltrans maintenance crews will close the two far left lanes of westbound Interstate 8 (I-8), between Hotel Circle and Taylor Street, tonight from midnight-8 a.m. The closure is needed to apply a unique directional safety feature to the two freeway lanes.
The crews will apply two, 8-foot by 20-foot I-8 shield logos and the word WEST in each of the two lanes to give motorists advance directional notice of the lane splits at the I-8/I-5 interchange.
The second part of the project will take place Saturday night, Nov. 4 from midnight-9 a.m. when crews will close the two far right lanes of I-8 and install two, 8-foot by 20-foot I-5 shield logos in each of the two lanes. The furthest right lane will read with the word SOUTH. The adjacent lane will have the word NORTH. Once complete there will be a total of eight shield logos embedded into the pavement
The project is intended to reduce the number of last-minute lane changes at the interchange. The process includes melting the plastic into the pavement.
