New Ramp Meter to be Activated I-5 in Oceanside
SAN DIEGO – A new ramp meter will be activated at the Harbor Drive on-ramp to southbound Interstate 5 (I-5) in Oceanside this Wednesday. The meter will operate mornings from 5:30 to 9:30.
The meter is part of a project to fill in the gaps in metering in the area to improve the flow of traffic along the corridor, according to the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans). The project also includes installation of ramp meters at the Birmingham Drive, Santa Fe Drive and Encinitas Boulevard on-ramps to northbound I-5. The northbound ramp meters will be scheduled for activation as the installations are completed.
Signs will be posted to alert motorists of the new ramp metering.
The ramp metering system controls more than 280 freeway on-ramps in San Diego County, allowing traffic to enter at a rate dependent on current traffic conditions. Motorists are delayed at the meter, but freeway speeds, overall travel times and highway safety are improved.
