Caltrans Re-Opens Sunbeam Rest Area

SAN DIEGO – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) today announced the re-opening of the Sunbeam Rest Area on Interstate 8 in Imperial County. Caltrans replaced the restrooms, traveler’s kiosk and maintenance rooms. The rest area has been upgraded to Americans with Disabilities Act and current Cal-OSHA Health and Safety Standards.

“I am pleased that the rest area is open before the summer driving season begins,” said Caltrans District Director Laurie Berman. “It will give travelers a safe place to take a break before they continue on to their destination. “

The rest stop is approximately six miles west from the city of El Centro. The $4.1 million renovation also includes a new septic system that produces reclaimed water for irrigation.

Construction crews are still working at the rest area to replace the RV Sanitation Station that is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year.
