Fallen Caltrans Highway Worker Identified
SAN DIEGO – A California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) maintenance worker died from injuries this morning after being struck by a vehicle along the northbound Interstate 15 ramp to eastbound State Route 94.
Richard Gonzalez, 52, of San Ysidro, started his state career with Caltrans in July 2008. He is survived by his wife Ruby and sons Ron, 22 and Erick, 12. Mr. Gonzalez worked for the Special Programs Crew based in Chula Vista. The crew was picking up trash in the interchange at the time of the incident.
The specifics of the incident are still under investigation by the California Highway Patrol. Funeral service is pending.
"The Caltrans Family is in shock with the passing of Mr. Gonzalez," said Caltrans District Director Laurie Berman. "This is a reminder that highway work is among the most dangerous professions, and we desperately need motorists to slow down and pay strict attention when driving, especially through our road maintenance and construction work zones."
This is the third Caltrans maintenance worker fatality in the past seven weeks. Landscape Worker Stephen Palmer Sr. died in the line of duty on May 4 in National City and Lead Worker Jaime Obeso passed on June 7 in El Centro, Imperial County.
