State Route 52 Construction Update

SAN DIEGO – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) announced today that the $255 million State Route 52 Sunny Side Gateway Project is on schedule to be completed in about a year.

Caltrans provided the update following the latest work this past week to install rumble bars on northbound SR-125 just north of Grossmont College Drive and leading to the Mission Gorge intersection. Other improvements at the intersection include new pavement markings, additional lighting and flashing beacons approaching the end of the roadway.

“These improvements were made as part of the construction contract in an effort to alert motorists now of the intersection,” said SR-52 Corridor Director Joel Haven. “We’re a little more than a year away from opening this project as a whole and we are excited about the traffic congestion relief it will provide for the people of the area.”

The SR-52 Sunny Side Gateway Project consists of building a four-lane freeway that stretches four miles from SR-125 to SR-67, with a signature bridge over Cuyamaca Street in the city of Santee. The project is provided by variety of federal, state and local money, including $133 million from the state’s Proposition 1B Transportation Bond Fund and $55 million from the San Diego Association of Government’s TransNet Sales Tax Fund.

This is the final link in the highway from La Jolla to Santee – with the first portion opened to traffic nearly 40 years ago.  This newest stretch of freeway is expected to initially carry about 75,000 vehicles a day, with that figure jumping to 105,000 vehicles a day by the year 2030.  Caltrans reminds motorists that additional road and ramp closures will be needed during the final year of construction, and motorist’s patience is appreciated.
