State Route 78 Closed the Next Five Weekends
SAN DIEGO –The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is making permanent repairs to State Route 78 (SR-78) on the portions that were damaged during the rain storms and mudslides earlier this year. The route will close Fridays at 9 p.m. and reopen Mondays at 5 a.m. Work is scheduled to conclude on Monday, May 5 at 5 a.m.
Caltrans will close the route between Bandy Canyon Road and Weekend Villa Road near Ramona. The California Highway Patrol will have officers at each location and will only allow residents with valid identification through the closure. Caltrans advises motorists to drive with caution and avoid the area by using an alternate route, such as Bandy Canyon Road, to Highland Valley Road, to SR-67 northbound, to SR-78.
“The weekend closures will allow us to get the road open and operating back to normal much faster than allowing one-way traffic control,” said Resident Engineer Mohammad Khan.
Caltrans will use the permanent Changeable Message Signs (CMS) on Interstate 15 and place temporary CMS on state routes 76, 78 and 67 to alert motorists of the closure.
Construction crews will be making drainage improvements, construct a new retaining wall, as well as making repairs to the roadway.
