Caltrans Warns Motorists Chains May Be Needed In Mountains
SAN DIEGO –The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is cautioning motorists this afternoon that winter driving conditions are in effect in all mountain areas of San Diego County.
Snow has forced temporary chain control along portions of Interstate 8, State Route 78, and SR-79 as of 3:30 p.m., but conditions are changing rapidly, so motorists are advised to check local radio and television weather reports before driving through the mountains.
This follows earlier reports that heavy rain had created small mudslides this afternoon, temporarily closing State Route 78 in the vicinity of Horizon View Drive in Ramona. Motorists are encouraged to use an alternate route, such as Bandy Canyon to Highland Valley Road and on to northbound SR-67 and SR-78.
