I-15 Via Rancho Parkway Ramp Meter Re-Activated

SAN DIEGO –California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will re-activate the ramp meter at the Via Rancho Parkway on-ramp to northbound Interstate 15 (I-15) this afternoon.  The meter will operate weekdays during the afternoon commute from 2-7.

The ramp meter was turned off a year ago for the construction of an additional northbound lane on the I-15 Managed Lanes Project.

“We had to reduce the ramp to just one lane during construction,” said Caltrans spokesperson Edward Cartagena.  “Now that the ramp is widened back to two lanes we will re-activate the meter to help traffic flow more freely during the peak commute times.”

Changeable message signs have been in place for the past two weeks to alert motorists in advance of the meter activation.

Ramp metering is an effective way to reduce freeway congestion by limiting the number of vehicles entering the freeway based on the amount of traffic on the main lanes.  Metering also improves safety by reducing sudden slowing and changes in speed on the highway.
