Caltrans Replacing Bridge Joints on the San Diego-Coronado Bridge

SAN DIEGO Construction crews will be repairing and replacing bridge joints on the San Diego-Coronado Bridge, according to the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans).  The work is underway and will take place nightly from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. through the end of December.

The bridge will remain open during the course of the work but one or more lanes may be closed.  There will always be at least one lane in each direction open to traffic on the bridge.

“Bridge joints allow the bridge to move just slightly enough so that the shock from the constant use is absorbed without damage to the bridge, “said Caltrans spokesperson Edward Cartagena.

Ramps between the bridge and Interstate 5 may be completely closed for a night or two, but there will be Changeable Message Signs in place to assist motorists through the detour.

This is routine maintenance work and crews will replace the joints portions at a time.  For additional information please contact the Caltrans Public Information Office at 619-688-6670.
