State Route 56/Ted Williams Parkway Bridge
Among Closures Planned For This Wednesday Night

SAN DIEGO The State Route 56/Ted Williams Parkway Bridge over Interstate 15 will be one of several freeway closures planned at the interchange this Wednesday at 10 p.m. and reopening to traffic Thursday at 5 a.m., according to the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans).  The other closures include:

  • The northbound I-15 off-ramp to SR-56/Ted Williams Parkway;

  • The northbound and southbound SR-56/Ted Williams Parkway on-ramps to I-15 and
  • Eastbound SR-56 from Penasquitos Boulevard to just west of the bridge over I-15.

This closure is called to allow work crews to complete a traffic switch on the bridge that crosses over I-15 at SR-56/Ted Williams Parkway.  Traffic will be moved from the older span of the bridge to newly-built lanes on the south side of the bridge.

In coming days, crews will demolish the old bridge deck and support columns and complete the new portion of the bridge.  When completed, the new bridge will be wider in order to accommodate the new I-15 Managed Lanes that will be in the median of the freeway.  The Managed Lanes will service carpools, vanpools, buses and motorcycles. Single-occupant vehicles will be able to use the Managed Lanes for a fee.

This temporary traffic switch will not reduce the number of westbound lanes on SR-56.  However, an additional lane will be added in the eastbound direction.  The additional eastbound lane should ease some of the normal congestion during the rush hour.

Detours: Signs will be in place to direct motorists to use local surface streets in order to get around the closure.

Caltrans will make every effort to minimize any disruption to the public during this closure.  Call (866) 890-1397 for information on the I-15 Managed Lanes Hotline.
