Interstate 15 Set for Closure To Demolish
the Middle Part of Carmel Mountain Bridge

SAN DIEGO All lanes of Interstate 15 (I-15) will be closed at the Carmel Mountain Overcrossing Sunday night (7/23) from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. Monday (7/24) to demolish the middle portion of the bridge.  The closure process starts at 9 p.m. with all lanes being fully closed by 11 p.m. The bridge is being rebuilt as part of the I-15 Managed Lanes Project.  The bridge at Carmel Mountain Road will also be closed.

Traffic was recently switched to the newly-built lanes on the south side of the structure.  Work crews will begin the process of demolishing the entire middle portion beginning Sunday night.  The demolition process and resulting freeway closures will continue on varying evenings for the next two weeks.

“This closure is necessary in order for our contractor to get in and take down the middle bridge deck and support columns to make way for a new and better bridge at this location,” said Caltrans Resident Engineer Abu-Bakr Al-Jafri.

The following detours will be in effect:

  • Southbound and northbound motorists will be taken off I-15 at the Carmel Mountain Road off-ramp and immediately routed to the corresponding on-ramp.  There is no detour onto local streets for motorists using the freeway.
  • Motorists who normally use the Carmel Mountain Road bridge will be directed to Ted Williams Parkway/State Route 56 to access I-15.

“This demolition will probably cause some noise to neighboring residents due to the very nature of the work,” said Abu-Bakr Al-Jafri.  “We thank the public for their patience and understanding  since the bridge cannot be demolished when there is traffic on the freeway.”

Caltrans will make every effort to minimize any disruption to the public during this closure.  For information on this and other project closures, motorists may phone the
I-15 Managed Lanes Hotline at (866) 890-1397.
