Bidders are cautioned that subsequent responses or contract addenda may affect or vary a response previously given.
Caltrans District 11 Construction Department has developed this method of answering Bidder's Inquiries to better serve the needs of the Contractors who bid on our Projects. Caltrans District 11 Construction Department will post all of the questions submitted by any of the contractors that are registered Planholders for that Contract, but reserves the right to not answer any questions deemed unsatisfactory for public viewing.
The BIDDER'S INQUIRIES & RESPONSES will be updated continuously and all attempts will be made to do the final posting by 15:00 on Wednesday prior to the bid opening.

The SB section of I-5 was recently surface ground and the shoulders repaved ( within the last year ). If I am correct, the yellow paint that is currently in place is "new" and therefore "lead free" per caltrans specs at the time it was placed... If this is the case, then the quantity for Item # 12 is incorrect. Please Advise.

  • Bid per the plans and specifications, if there are any discrepancies in quantities then they will be handled in accordance with Section 4-1.03 of the Standard Specifications.

Upon further review, the median shoulders that are shown to have yellow stripe removed are also shown to be cold planed it seems redundant to also do an expensive paint removal process on something that will be eradicated by another process...

YOUR TRAFFIC HANDLING PLAN SHOWS BOTH NORTHBOUND AND SOUTHBOUND TEMPORARY K-RAIL BEING INSTALLED SIMULTANEOUSLY.  IS THIS NECESSARY?  COULD YOU PHASE IT?

  • Yes, it is necessary to protect the work area and prevent cross median accidents during the construction. 
  • No, any request to phase the project will not be allowed since it is a safety issue.

Bid Item is listed as Each for Unit of Measure. Section 10-1.05 of the Special Provisions states that Item #1 will be paid for as Contract Lump Sum. Lump Sum appears to be the proper unit for payment. Please advise.

  • Lump sum is the correct method of payment, but due to the time frame an addenda cannot be issued therefore bid it as you see it.

 Plan Sheet / Specification Reference=Special Provisions Section 10-1.37 IRRIGATION CROSSOVERS

The section requires that "Conduits be placed in open trenches in...." and that "Conduits shall be corrugated high density polyethylene (CHDPE) pipe." Since the crossovers as shown on the plans cross the the entire width of the freeway will it be allowable to use the open trench method? Please clarify?

  • No. A Contract Change Order shall be written to to correct the method of placement since under no conditions would trenching across the freeway be allowed. For bidding purposes use the method stated in Section 10-1.37 IRRIGATION CROSSOVERS of the Special Provisions.

In Section 10-1.26 it states that the "Type Z-2 material contains average concentrations greater than or equal to 5.0 mg/L Soluuble Lead..." How much greater and where?
