20 : Temporary Railing (Type K)
Are the stage plans correct relative to "staking" of the k-rail? Not all stages require this anchoring. Why is this now being required? This will greatly increase the workers exposure to traffic, because of the increased time to install and remove the railing.

Section 10-1.29
Section 10-1.29 calls out for an ADIEM-350
crash cushion manufactured by Trinity Industries.
Due to obvious safety concerns, the Department has developed formal processes for traffic products, in the interests of the traveling public, as well as those of the Department and private construction and maintenance workers. The Department has a formal process by which crash cushions and end treatments for barriers and railings are submitted by the manufacturers, reviewed and tested as necessary for performance by the Department, approved for use on State highways, and placed on a list of approved products. This is an intensive process. The products must be approved and on the list to be considered in the design of a project. Each of the approved products has individual physical and functional characteristics that affect its ability to perform the function needed at the particular location within a project. The Department determines the appropriate product to be required at each location, as part of the project design, based on such factors as traffic volume, traffic speed, accident history, available space, setback distances, maintenance safety, initial and maintenance costs, and other factors unique to the location and to the products. When the Department has specified only one product, it has determined, through the above process, that only one product can meet the Department's needs at a particular location. Consequently, the Department's action complies with the requirements of Public Contract Code section 3400. |

The earthwork summary breakdown has a row titled "Design Grading". It is the sum of the contour areas at the on and off ramps, as well as outside shoulder to R/W areas. Your cross section index identifies them by "note 2" but you do not breakdown the qty's by location. Without this breakdown over 50% of the embankment cannot be identified. It would also be helpful to breakdown the "G" Line by NB/SB and median. Will you provide this information.
