Caltrans District 11 Construction Department will post all of the questions submitted by any of the contractors that are registered. Planholders for that Contract, but reserves the right to not answer any questions deemed unsatisfactory for public viewing.

 Plan Sheet / Specification Reference=Item 28, Roadway Excavation, Special Provision Section 10-1.30

The referenced section includes "foundation treatment of 0.9M" wherein 0.6M is to be removed and 0.3M is to be treated and compacted in place.  What depth of is to measured for payment, 0.6M or 0.9M?

 Plan Sheet / Specification Reference=Item 28, Roadway Excavation, Special Provision Section 10-1.30

There is no item nor Spec Section for "Ditch Excavation".  The plans and sections depict a ditch alongside the roadway that is 2.4M wide at the bottom.  The Standards provide that the excavation required to construct a ditch with a bottom width of less than 4 meters will be classed as ditch excavation.  Why isn't this work classed as "Ditch Excavation"?

  • Paragraph 3 of Section 19-4.03 PAYMENT within Section 19-4 DITCH EXCAVATION in the Standard Specifications states:
    The excavation of gutters within the median area of a divided highway,
    and gutters between the roadbed shoulder and an adjacent excavation 
    slope, and gutters in excavation benches, and side gutters contiguous
    to embankment slopes, all as shown on the plans, will be paid for as
    roadway excavation and payment will not be made as ditch excavation
    for that work. 
 
  • Standard Plan A62A EXCAVATION AND BACKFILL MISCELLANEOUS DETAILS; detail ROADWAY EXCAVATION - DITCH EXCAVATION shows that any ditch regardless of shape within the roadway prism shall be paid for as Roadway Excavation. Addendum No. 1 states that  the ditch excavation from Station 294+85 "G" to 297+45 "G" Line will be measured and paid as roadway excavation.

 Plan Sheet / Specification Reference=Item 28, ROADWAY EXCAVATION, FOUNDATION TREATMENT

The job cross-sections indicate that the 0.9M depth of foundation treatment can be "superseded" by the structural section if the fill from o.g. to f.g. is something less than the thickness of the structural section.  In such cases, the "foundation treatment" could be only or few millimeters or even nil. Is this true?  Is this what is required/desired/intended?

The bid quantities  for PCCP do not appear to have included any PCCP under the AC Dike  locations.

Will PCCP be required under the AC Dikes? 
If the PCCP is  required under the dike locations, does it have to be poured monolithically with  the lane and shoulder paving? 
Will a longitudinal joint (i.e tie bar) be  required between the ES and the outside edge of AC  dike?

  • Yes, as shown on sheet 2 of 180 TYPICAL CROSS SECTIONS X-1.
  • Yes, see Addendum No. 2. The width for A = 280 mm, C = 242 mm, E = 400 mm, F = 200 mm.
  • No, a longitudinal joint is not required. See Addendum No. 2

 Plan Sheet / Specification Reference=Item # 40 & 41 Concrete pavement, Special Provision Sections 5-1.16 areas for contractor use

Will a batch plant be allowed on site?
Section 5-1.16 of the Special Provisions is in regards to use for an office, yard or storage areas. The ability to use an area within the project limits for a batch plant is allowable with the following conditions;
1) No other parties shall receive or use material from the proposed plant,
2) Contractor shall yield start of work to ongoing, prior authorized, work adjacent to or within the limits of the proposed site including the contracts listed in Section 10-1.07 of the Special Provisions,
3) Contractor shall obtain all permits necessary and required by law from all public agencies having jurisdiction over the proposed work,
4) The proposed plant shall not impact the staging or schedule of the project,
5) The proposed plant shall meet all the requirements of the contract.
