Caltrans District 11 Construction Department has developed this method of answering Bidder's Inquiries to better serve the needs of the Contractors who bid on our Projects. Caltrans District 11 Construction Department will post all of the questions submitted by any of the contractors that are registered Planholders for that Contract, but reserves the right to not answer any questions deemed unsatisfactory for public viewing.
The BIDDER'S INQUIRIES & RESPONSES will be updated continuously and all attempts will be made to do the final posting by 15:00 on the day prior to the bid opening. However, to allow the Department reasonable time to review and respond, bidders are recommended to send in their inquiries at least four (4) working days prior to the bid opening.

Question = This is a request that you provide the as-built column heights for all of the columns that receive column casings. In reviewing the contract drawings these heights are not provided as they typically are on column casing retrofits, nor are the bottom of footing elevations for each column that has a casing.

Question=Page Q-3 (sheet 357) gives a structural section summary of quantities, this list calls out 545.46 CY of JPCP between station 316+00 and 323+83.37 on the southbound side. On both the Layout Drawings (L-1, sheet 7) and the profile drawings (PS-1, sheet 23) the work is called out to begin at station 323+00 and the first section to end at station 323+72.47 in the southbound direction. Please provide clarification as to what stationing the work is to begin and the corresponding quantities for the first section of work.

Plan Sheet / Specification Reference= Item 137, Minor Concrete (Curb and Sidewalk) Plan Sheet 356 Summary of quantities.

Question=  Quantities listed on Q sheet appear incorrect for both the curb and the sidewalk.  For Type A2-6 Curb, CALTRANS standard plan indicates .05903 CY per LF, this does not correspond with quantities shown for the Curb.  Sidewalk quantities also do not calc correctly.  Example # 1 26 LF x 5' x 4" thick should be 1.59 CY, chart indicates 4.81.  The last one on the chart plan indicates a length of 522 LF, which would equate to 31.9 CY, chart indicates 4.81 CY.  Please clarify.

Question= We have the following questions in regards to the captioned project:
1. Naples St UC – Sht 520 of 635 – Sect A-A – Please review and correct the dimensions of the Abutment seat.

2. Bonita Rd UC – Sht 558 of 635 – Abutment Layout – Plan View – Please provide the dimensions of the abutment footing.
3. Euclid Ave UC – Sht 619 of 635 - Abutment Layout – Plan View – Please provide the dimensions of the abutment footing.
4. Are the skew angles, where applicable, available for the bridge structures? Please advise.

  • For questions #2, 3 & 4: The existing footing dimensions are provided in the as-built drawings.  Please refer to Bidder's Inquiry #1 above for obtaining the as-built drawings.

Plan Sheet / Specification Reference= Item # 105, Column casings

Question= Please provide information on how to obtain As-Built Drawings for the bridge columns.

Also there is no information on what columns will require casings. a Column table will be helpful.

On sheet 604 (steel column casing), under note #5, it says 1/4" min for thick for casings with a 4'-4" dia or less.

These column casings are not round at the base measure 4'-4" X 10'-4".
Are these column casings to be considered as 4'-4" DIA and hence apply 1/4" thick casing.

  • Please refer to the response to Bidder inquiry No. 1 above  for  information on how to obtain As-Built Drawings for the bridge columns.
  • All existing columns for Route 805/54 Separation (Br. No. 57-0746), Sweetwater Road UC (Br. No. 57-0639) and Euclid Avenue UC (Br. No. 57-0640) are to be retrofit with column casings as shown on General Plan sheets 576, 595 and 615, respectively.
  • No.  The 4'-4" diameter reference applies to circular casings.  Please refer to note #5 on sheets 585, 604 and 624.

Plan Sheet / Specification Reference= E-39

Question= On plan sheet E-39 there is a symbol calling for a 200W HPS Soffit fixture however this is not a standard symbol so i was wondering if you could provide more detail about this fixture or perhaps a cut sheet. We are trying to find out what this fixture is and how it should be installed. The plans are also calling for a 400W fixture.

On plan sheet E-38 there is a ES-90 detail which is not explained on the plans or in the specs. So again we were wondering if you could provide more information on this detail.

Question= Note 2 on pile data table indicates that a pile lug is required for the HP 10 x 57 piles. Piles on this structure only include HP 14 x 89 piles. Please indicate if  pile lugs are required for the HP 14 x 89 piles.

Question= In locations where new pipe culverts are installed in existing paved shoulders that are not reconstructed with new pavement sections; under which bid items does the pavement patching get measured and paid?
  • The hot mix asphalt (type A) placed for reconstruction of existing asphalt concrete pavement will be compensated under contract item #70, "Hot Mix Asphalt (Type A)." Question=
1-Addendum # 1, issued plan sheets Q-4 and Q-5 with an added Item of work and quantity, "Conc Barrier Elect Type 60GC". Layout plan sheets, construction detail sheets and current bid items currently do not define this work. Please define prior to bid.?

2-Do you want 1/2" or 3/8" cover plates for Type 60 R-4 Barrier.

3- What is the required Vertical Ht. for the 1/2" or 3/8" Cover plate on the low paving side shown in Sect G-G on plan sheet 51 of 635.

  • 1. Please refer to Construction Detail sheet C-9 or sheet 47 of 635. This sheet has the Electrolier/Concrete Barrier Type 60 GC Detail. A new Bid item "023010 Electrolier/Concrete Barrier (Type 60GC)" was added at the end of the Bid Item List (see revised addendum list). The locations are shown on the quantity table and on the layout sheets.
  • 2. Please use a 1/2" cover plate for the Type 60 R-4 Barrier
  • 3. Please use a 56" minimum height.

There are no Standard Details in Type 60 Series Barrier that accomodate reinforcing steel elimination or barrier dimensional details. Request that these details be provided by addendum to all bidders, prior to bid date.

The Type 60GC, 60G and 60C shown on current lay out plans , including Addendum # 1 do not accomodate this electrical requirement. please clarify before the bid by addendum to all plan holders.

Question=1- Ref Plan Sheets 365,373 and layout plans L-5 to L-9-Your retaining wall plans show undefined work at retaining walls that include a non standard barrier type with 1/2" galvn steel cover plates. This work is not currently included in contract items of work or defined in the special provisions. Please confirm that this ambiguity will be handled by CCO after contract award.
