Caltrans District 11 Construction Department has developed this method of answering Bidder's Inquiries to better serve the needs of the Contractors who bid on our Projects. Caltrans District 11 Construction Department will post all of the questions submitted by any of the contractors that are registered Planholders for that Contract, but reserves the right to not answer any questions deemed unsatisfactory for public viewing.
The BIDDER'S INQUIRIES & RESPONSES will be updated continuously and all attempts will be made to do the final posting by 15:00 on the day prior to the bid opening.

Plan Sheet / Specification Reference=Sheet X-1

Question=SHEET X-1, suggests that there is to be cold planing of the existing AC pavement and repaving with RHMA, yet there is no bid item "COLD PLANE EXISTING AC PAVEMENT" as is normal procedure in this district.  Also, sheet X-1 clearly indicates removal of AC Dike and there in no bid item for that activity as is normal procedure in this district.
Question=Is there to be cold planing?  Is there to be a bid item for cold planing?  Evidently, there will be AC dike removal, will there be a bid item for AC dike removal?

 Plan Sheet / Specification Reference=Sheet X-1=Bid Item 16 Tack Coat, Plan Sheet 2, Typical Cross Sections X-1

Question=Plan sheet X-1 indicates that existing AC is equal to the new RAC depth.  Therefore the "Roadway Excavation" (Cold Planning) will expose the existing base.  In the traveled way areas, the existing base is shown to be CTB, and therefore we understand the application of a tack coat.  However the shoulder areas indicate aggregate base will be exposed, which normally does not require a tack coat.  The tack coat quantities on Q sheets indicate shoulder areas are to receive tack.  Please clarify if the shoulder areas comprised of aggregate base are to receive tack or just areas in which CTB is exposed.
  • Tack Coat shall not be applied on existing exposed Aggregate Base prior to placing Rubberized Hot Mix Asphalt - (Gap Graded). Quantities of Tack Coat to be measured and paid for shall be made in accordance with the project Specifications.

Question= Sheet 2 X-1 Typical Cross Sections does not indicate for the asphalt dike to be backfilled. Sheet 4 C-1 Construction Details / Dike details indicates backfill of dike. There is not a bid item for shoulder backing. Please clarify if the asphalt dike is to be backfilled, and if so, provide any material specifications / requirements.

  • No shoulder backing. For Dike Details see Standard Plan A87B Note 4.
