Plan Sheet / Specification Reference= item 25, spec sheet 105, plan sheet 4

Question= Plan sheet 4 has a detail to repair spalled joints. The dowel joint is to be repaired to a depth of 4 inches. The specification allows a maximus saw cut of 2.67". There are 1-1/4" steel bars in the existing spalled joint. At a depth of 2.67" the bar will not be exposed. At a depth of 4" the bar will be exposed to spring line. Not allowed to make a sawcut to the 4" depth makes it impossible to remove the concrete in the 3" slot to a 4" depth. Is the dowel bar to be removed and the remaining hole filled with polyester concrete?

  • Existing spalls may be up to 4 inches deep. Repairs are to be performed per normal spall repair methods. Dowel bars are to remain in place. Bidders are to consider methods and cost to remove material to bottom of spall with maximum sawcut depth per specifications. Detail C-1 of the plans clearly indicates that the sawcut does not necessarily extend to the bottom of the spall"
