Caltrans District 11 Construction Department has developed this method of answering Bidder's Inquiries to better serve the needs of the Contractors who bid on our Projects. Caltrans District 11 Construction Department will post all of the questions submitted by any of the contractors that are registered Planholders for that Contract, but reserves the right to not answer any questions deemed unsatisfactory for public viewing.
The BIDDER'S INQUIRIES & RESPONSES will be updated continuously and all attempts will be made to do the final posting by 15:00 on the day prior to the bid opening.

Question= Is the GC responsible for the QC of all construction activities such as concrete, grading, welding, etc.? or Caltrans will be providing the entire QC for the project?

 

  • The Contractor shall be responsible for controlling the quality of the material entering the work and of the work performed. Attention is directed to SECTION 5:  "CONTROL OF WORK", SECTION 6:  "CONTROL OF MATERIALS" of the Standard Specifications and the different sections of the Special Provisions and the AMENDMENTS TO THE STANDARD SPECIFICATIONS of the Special Provisions.

Question= Is the intent to complete the construction of road and bridge in two stages? Overlay of staging plans onto layout plans and cross sections show gaps in roadway construction. Will contractor be allowed to modify the beginning and end of Temp Railing (Type K) so that project can be completed in two stages during the day?
 

  • Yes, this is to be done in two stages. The placement of the temporary Krailing can be modified or other minor deviation is allowed as per section 10-1.14 "Maintaining Traffic" of the special provision. The Engineer may approve the deviations if there is no significant increase in the cost to the State and if the work can be expediated and better serve the public traffic.

  • This will be done at the end of stage I under lane closure. The rest of the roadway will be completed in stage II.

Question= WHERE DO I FIND THE CALTRANS SPECIFICATION FOR DETERMINING WHAT SIZE OF WIRE GALVENIZED PER SECTION 75-1.05 WILL PROVIDE A 75 YEAR SERVICE LIVE?
 

  • The corrosion rates for the hot dipped galvanized (HDG) coating and steel shall be in accordance with Section 11.10.6.4.2a of the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications (2007). The cross section of the steel remaining after 75 years shall have a minimum residual strength of 450 plf.

Question= Will Caltrans continue to post and answer questions related to this project? Based on what I have seen on the bidder's inquiry page it seems as though Caltrans is not answering any questions. It is our understanding that these jobs will be put back out to bid with a limited time frame after a state budget is passed. Can you please continue to answer questions with this fact in mind?

  • Yes, Caltrans will keep posting inquiries and answers as they become available.
