Caltrans District 11 Construction Department has developed this method of answering Bidder's Inquiries to better serve the needs of the Contractors who bid on our Projects. Caltrans District 11 Construction Department will post all of the questions submitted by any of the contractors that are registered Planholders for that Contract, but reserves the right to not answer any questions deemed unsatisfactory for public viewing.
The BIDDER'S INQUIRIES & RESPONSES will be updated continuously and all attempts will be made to do the final posting by 15:00 on Wednesday prior to the bid opening.

Question= On Plan Sheet #182, Note #3 - it shows to remove the Type 9 rail and no where else in the plans does it show the details for the removal and/or placement of new rail. If the rail is to be removed, does the rebar need to be saved?

On Plan Sheet #201, it shows removal of slope paving on what looks like the south abutment only. Will there be the need for slope paving to be removed on the north abutment also? And what are the dimensions for both locations?

Plan Sheet / Specification Reference= The special provisions, page 108, subsection entitled "REMOVE YELLOW PAINTED TRAFFIC STRIPE" in the next to last paragraph states that "One Lead Compliance Plan shall be prepared that addresses exposure to lead from traffic stripe and from material containing aerially deposited lead.


Question=There is no mention anywhere else in the bid documents of AERIALLY DEPOSITED LEAD. Is there material containing AERIALLY DEPOSITED LEAD that will be encountered in the course of construction of this project?

On a 2-lane roadway, take data cores from either lane. On a 4-lane roadway, take data cores from each direction in the outermost lane. On a roadway with more than 4 lanes, take data cores from the median lane and the outermost lane in each direction."

Plan Sheet / Specification Reference= Traffic Charts for 805 and Bonita Road

Question= On these two roads, the only lane closures are at night.  There are
80 pile to be driven in the footings for bent 2 and bent 3.  There will be
excessive noise during this proceedure.  The businesses in close proximity
will be unhappy due to the excessive noise.  District 7 and 12 do not allow
driving pile at night and have closure charts that will allow daytime work.
Can the traffic charts be redone to allow driving pile between the hours of
7am and 10pm?

  • The Traffic Charts are to be used with restriction as specified. For this project the charts are for the shifting of traffic as shown on the Stage Construction. The shifting of traffic and placement of k-rail should happen at nights or during the times allowed per the charts. Piles are driven under stage 1A of the plans behind K-rails at anytime as long as it complies with Section 5-1.10 SOUND CONTROL REQUIREMENTS of the Special Provision.

Question= Designated jacking locations at girders A and C at bents 2 and 3 are shown at mid-depth of superstructure, which is middle of sloping girder. How can jacks be placed at sloping girders?
Are jacking recesses allowed in columns? If yes, where can they be located?
Are Estimated jacking loads shown in table correct?
  • The "circles" shown on the plan view at the bents are "jacking load locations". The actual jack locations for the bents are to be determined by the contractor. The contractor will jack the bent falsework at the bottom of the falsework.

Q @ 6/10/09, A @ 6/18/09.  The posted answer to the question does not
adequately address the situation.  It is not possible to drive piling at
night in conformance with the sound control requirements.  It is not
possible to drive piling in the daytime in conformance with the traffic
charts and lane closure restrictions.

Question= What can you change to make the planned construction possible:
A, the traffic charts; B, the sound control requirements; C, the pile
foundation design?

Question=The specials mention that there is a portion of the abutments to be removed and the plans show the overhang portion to be removed per the abutment 1 and 4 layout sheets. Then on Abutment Detail Sheet No.4, the shaded area that indicates the bridge removal (portion) extending beyond the edge of deck. There is no concrete beyond the edge of deck. Please clarify the removal dimensions of the abutments.
Is there to be any portion of the approach slab and wingwalls removed?
