Question= When will the electronic cross sections be available to download for our use?

• Cross sections are available as of 07/23/08 and can be downloaded for printing from the link above at any local printing firm or on your own printing equipment:

Question= 1)  For the 2" and 3" Drilling installations, are you calling for
Type 1 or Type 3 conduit.  For future reference, where and how is this made
clear in the plans and specifications.

• The conduit is type 3 as stated on page 273 under "CONDUIT".
  

2)Are the MDCS ducts to be installed within casing?  If so, what type?

• It will depend on the type of Jacking/Drilling method the contractor chooses to use. On page 278 directional boring is an option of drilling/jacking which does not use casing.
  

3)Where is MVDS defined in the specs and what type of conduit is this calling for?

• On page 260, MVDS is not conduit type. It's a vehicle detection system see page 307 for specifications.

4)How are the individual drilling locations delineated on the plan sheets? I am not seeing them.

• The Electrical Plans are not complete until phase 2 submittal. Please see page 259 which states "The following are the quantity break-down for the contract lump sum items of signals, lighting, and electrical systems. The quantity break-down are included in these special provisions for the contractor to use for bidding purposes in the absence of signed electrical plans".

Question= Please clarify in which Stage the section on Southbound 15L1 from 488+20 to 489+00 and for Right Side of R4NA Ramp.  It appears traffic is kept on existing ramp through Stage 4, but I don't see the stage to remove the existing ramp and complete right side of ramp and sectin on 15L1.

• Please refer to the revised staging sheet in Addendum No. 2.

Question= Hoop spacing for CIDH pile reabr cages does not met your current 1992 design memo requirements for distance between reinforcing steel.  The minimum states 5" x 5" windows.  With your hoops currently show @ 75mm (3") the actual distance between the rebar will be 2 1/2 ".

• Sheet 673 of  796 has been changed, refer to addendum # 2 dated October 3,2008.

Question= On sheet 434 it shows the horizontal steel to be 600mm or 2 ft. on centers, but on sheet 430 on the typical section it points to the wall and references B15-1 on the Standard Plans which shows the horizontal steel to be 4 ft. on centers, which has been the case on all state projects to date. Does the State want the steel on 2ft. center or 4ft? If 2 fts is required then would it be possible to grout the wall solid in order to save time and labor from stopping every 2 ft to grout? the cost of the additional grout (25%) would be cheaper that the labor.

• Please see the revised sheet 434 in addendum No. 2.  The spacing of the horizontal #13 bars has been changed to 1219mm.

Question= There seems to be some kind of pattern or design attached the walls that is not shown on the Details sheet 434. Can you please clarify what this is?

• Please see the revised sheet 434 in addendum No. 2.  The hatching shown in the "partial elevation view" has been revised to clarify the block pattern.

Question= What soil friction angle is to be used to determine pile length and spacing?

• Please refer to Addendum No. 2.  Foundation Recommendations for the sound walls have been added to the information handout.

Plan Sheet / Specification Reference=

Question= What is the requirement for constructing CIDH piles with less than 3 diameters center to center
spacing?
The Addendum to the Foundation Report for 9th Ave. UC (Widen) dated 10/3/07 states "Within a support location, no piles shall be constructed (i.e. concrete poured) immediately adjacent to recently constructed piles until the adjacent (recently constructed) CIDH piles have cured for a
minimum period of 48 hours."

Question= In the Notice to Bidders, the telephone number (916) 654-4990 is for another state agency.  Can the correct telephone number be provided to where the Bid Documents may be viewed.

Question= There are no specifications as to what water district these in and will there be a specifications for these line items or an estimated cost for them provided?

Question= Where can I find the cross section for “R-3CA” Line? (Citracado Parkway N/B Off Ramp). The cross section for the subject line is not posted on the internet.

• The concrete barrier type 60AR (MOD) is located at Ninth Avenue, details are shown on plan sheet 783 of 796, "Typical Section No. 2."

Question= WHAT BID ITEM PAYS FOR CONCRETE BARRIER 60R1 ???

• Please refer to Addendum No. 2.  Item #268 "CONCRETE BARRIER (TYPE 60R1)" has been added.

Question= Bid item 247, Changeable Message Sign System has no plan or material sheet in the specs.  There is no way to estimate the item. Please clarify.

• Bid item 247 (Changeable Message Sign) is covered by our SSPs. The contractor will use the cost breakdown table shown on page 271 to complete their bidding as stated on page 259.

Question= WHERE CAN I FIND THE X-SECTION FOR THE CITRACADO OFF RAMP? I HAVE ASKED THIS QUESTION BEFORE BUT I WAS REFERED TO CROSS SECTION FOR CITRACADO ON RAMP.

• The "R-3CA" line is the file named "R3CA1_080603.pdf".  For the ramp gores please refer to the mainline cross sections.  "R-3CA" from 469+65.337 to 470+47.663 is in the file named "(north)45632 to 47300_SD15R1_080612.pdf"

Question= What dose each bid item scope include or cover...?

• Bid Item 229 is the CB (type 736A Mod) in bridge items, and Bid Item 225 is the CB (Type 736A Mod) in the roadway items.  BI 229 is Final Pay, and 225 is not.
• Please refer to Addendum No. 2.  The temp closed circuit television items have been changed to specify (Location 1), and (Location 2).

Question= Information for above items could not be found in the special provisions. Will this be added? Please advise

• Please see Addendum No. 2.  In the Special Provisions, Section 10-1.98, "METAL BEAM GUARD RAILING," subsection "ALTERNATIVE
  CRASH CUSHION SYSTEM," and subsection "TERMINAL SYSTEM (TYPE CAT)," are added.

Question= The jacking subs are questining the thickness of the pipe. According to them, in most cases for Caltrans project the specified thickness is around (15mm) 1/2 ". Is 50 mm the correct thickness?

• Please bid per the current contract documents. 
• Please refer to addendum 3.  Engineer’s Estimate Item 183, the description is revised as follows: "JACKED 900 MM WELDED STEEL PIPE (15 MM THICK)"

Question= Can an optional construction joint be installed at top of pipe?

• Per sheet 173 the concrete backfill is a monolithic pour.

Question= The previous noted addenda 2 cost breakdown schedule examples are different from the original examples as isssued in the initial set of Special Provision. But addenda 2 does not make any mention of plan sheet changes or elimnation of what is shown on those plan sheets.

Are we to assume that any item that was on the original Cost schedule breakdown example which does not now show on the revised schedule as per addenda 2 has been in fact eliminated from the current project?

• Please refer to Addenda 2, "Project Plan Sheets 28, 29, 85, 125, 126, 516, 517, and 533 are deleted."

Question= I know I have asked the question before, but the jacking subs are still insisting that the 2-inch casing is too big and it should be half inches thick. They site past Caltrans project with similar situation. We will bid it as 50 mm thick casing. But it is going to very expensive. Can you check and make sure that the designers did not make a clerical mistake?

Question= There is an existing concrete channel that runs on the west side of the South Bound Lanes from Sta 481+00 - 489+82 (+/-).  Drainage System(DS)-13 is in line with the concrete channel.  The concrete channel will need to be removed in order to complete DS-13.  What bid item will this work be paid under?

• If the concrete channel is within the limits of roadway excavation it is included in the unit price for roadway excavation.  If it is within the trenching limits for the drainage unit it is included in the unit price of the various bid items for drainage pipe. 
  

Question= The designed pavement grade break at the ETW, .6 meters from the a/c shoulder, is not an industry standard practice. This design causes constructiblity issues at all levels of the pavement section. Industry standard equipment cannot put a break that close to an edge. Will Caltrans consider moving the grade break to the joint between AC and PCC?

Question= Please clearly state if the CMU walls for the aesthetic pattern have split-face on one-side (freeway side)or if the walls have split-face on both sides (freeway & residential).

• The CMU wall pattern has a split-face surface on both sides of the wall.

Question= There are alot of tapering PCC sections... when the taper is less than one lane...must it be tied? Do you want to have a 1.2 m wide section with isolation joint?

• Please refer to standard plan P2.  Isolation joints are used for widening adjacent to existing skewed pavement.Tied joints are used for widening adjacent to non-skewed pavement.
  

Question= 8-2.02 states that portland cement concrete at slag embankments is considered to be in a corrosive environment.  Please identify the structures that this section applies to.

• Please refer to the materials information brochure for the corrosion analysis of the in place materials.  Section 8-2.02 applies if slag aggregate is used per section 8-1.04.
