Caltrans District 11 Construction Department will post all of the questions submitted by any of the contractors that are registered Planholders for that Contract, but reserves the right to not answer any questions deemed unsatisfactory for public viewing.

When will cross-sections be available for download?  Will you make the lead investigation report downloadable also?

Question= What is the intent of traffic chart no. 6?
The Stage Construction Plans for stages 2A, 2C and 3A all have Lomas Santa Fe Dr striped with one lane in each direction and K-rail protecting the work area. The work activities for these stages includes CIDH bridge construction, tie back walls, cast-in-place retaining walls, roadway excavation and pavement construction. This work cannot be completed in 21 consective days.
Does chart no. 6 apply to stages 2A, 2C and 3A? When and for what items of work is chart 6 used?

Question=  Bid item 96 and the quantities on plan sheet 551 show the the diameter of the cast-in-drilled holes for abutments 1 and 4 as 400 mm.  The details of these abutments and the pile data table show 600 mm as the diameter of these holes.  Please advise what the correct diameter should be.

  • Please refer to section 10-1.33 "EXISTING HIGHWAY FACILITIES" of the Special Provisions. This section directs your attention to Section 15 of the Standard Specifications where sub-section 15-2.02 "REMOVAL METHODS," states, " Removing highway facilities which interfere with construction or which are directed to be removed by the Engineer shall be performed as specified in this Section 15‑2.02 and in the special provisions, or as shown on the plans, or as directed by the Engineer."

Question=The addendum specifies that all median barriers along the SD-5 line, from Station:  585+37 to Station 658+96 shall be integrally pigmented colored concrete....  Plans denoted the limits of the 'new' median barrier on the SD-5 line from Station 585+37 to Station 628+96...There is no new barrier shown from station 628+96 to station 658+96.
Please clarify the limits of the new colored concrete barriers along the SD-5 line.
  • There is a typo in the addendum and it should read 628+96 instead of 658+96.

 Plan Sheet / Specification Reference= Sheet 660, detail for 750mm CIDH concrete soldier pile rebar cages.  Section 'B-B' .

Question= Current design of rebar cages for this structure do not meeting Caltrans propoer clearances for rebar windows.  Caltrans Design memo states Minimum of 5" X 5" window clear.  The current design only has 4 3/8" clear between the verticals.  This will cause a problem in the concrete placement and restricted flowability of the concrete to the outside of the rebar cage.

Question=  Referenced drawing calls for "Ultimate butt splice" at #43 Splice detail. We cannot find a Caltrans approved ultimate butt splice on your web site. Do you want a Service splice at this location in lieu of an ultimate butt splice? Alternatively, can you provide an approved detail of an ultimate butt splice?
  •  No service splice at these locations, bid per the contract bid documents.
    Refer to the Special Provisions,  Section 10-1.68, "REINFORCEMENT" (page 305).  The Department's mechanical splices prequalified list can be found at the following website:  http://www.dot.ca.gov/hq/esc/approved_products_list/ , then select "Steel Reinforcing Couplers (Acceptance Criteria for Mechanical Couplers)."  NOTE:  This list is in US Customary Units, and this contract is in metric.  The #43 bar referenced is a metric equivalent which can be converted using the "Substitution Table for Bar Reinforcement" located in Section 8-1.01, "Substitution of Non-Metric Materials and Products," (page 147) of the Special Provisions.

Question=  In the "Wall Cap Texture Detail", a 152 x 152 x 6.4 weathering steel plate with 25 x 25 x 100 bar stud is called out.  But in Section C-C a 6.4 x 134 x 134 A588 PL with 6.4 x 100 headed stud is called out instead.  Which steel plate is required for this project?

  •   Use the dimensions shown in Section C-C, "6.4 x 134 x 134 ASTM A588 plate with 6.4 x 100 headed stud at center."  This applies to Plan Sheets 601, 640, and 666 of 671.

 Plan Sheet / Specification Reference=  Bid items 198, 199, 201, and 202; Plan sheets 487, 581, E-11 and E-12.

Question=

1.    BI# 201 "Communication Conduit Bridge" does not specify the use of expansion joints or the installation of innerduct. Are they required and if so how many? Per Sheet 581 there are no conduit supports. Is that correct? Is the measurement for single pipe?
  •  There are no expansion joints and there are no inner ducts. The pipe is supported by the concrete members shown on sheet 581 (abutment diaphragms, bent caps and an intermediate diaphragm) and no additional supports  are required. This is to be an empty steel pipe, for future use.
2.    BI# 199 "Lighting and Sign Illumination" addresses the use of 200W Soffits per sheet 487 of 671. Are they to be cast in place or will they need to be externally mounted? The standard plans do not address the use of soffit lights as external mounts and structure plans are not to clear of such installation. Are they to be pendant?

  •  The 200 w soffit luminaires are being mounted on the existing structure. See note 2 on sheet 487.  They     will be similar to the Standard Plan and Specs for wall mounted luminaires.

3.    BI# 202 "Electrical Irrigation Electrical" refer to sheets E-11 and E-12; They do not address the size of conduits, they refer to the irrigation plans but they do not address the information. Can you please elaborate the size?
  • Sizes of the conduit are called out (shown) on the Sheet LD-6 Landscape Details. (27C)

4.    BI# 198 only addresses the temporary stage construction for Stage 2A in location 2, How is Caltrans addressing all other staging temporary electrical in all other systems and staging? There is no provision or method of payment.
