In some instances, the question and answer may represent a summary of the matters discussed rather than a word-for-word recitation. The responses may be considered along with all other information furnished to prospective bidders for the purpose of bidding on the project. The availability or use of information provided in the responses to bidder' inquiries is not to be construed in any way as a waiver of the provisions of Section 2-1.03 of the Standard Specifications or any other provision of the contract, the plans, Standard Specifications or Special Provisions, nor to excuse the contractor from full compliance with those contract requirements. Bidders are cautioned that subsequent responses or contract addenda may affect or vary a response previously given.
Caltrans District 11 Construction Department has developed this method of answering Bidder's Inquiries to better serve the needs of the Contractors who bid on our Projects. Caltrans District 11 Construction Department will post all of the questions submitted by any of the contractors that are registered Planholders for that Contract, but reserves the right to not answer any questions deemed unsatisfactory for public viewing.
The BIDDER'S INQUIRIES & RESPONSES will be updated continuously and all attempts will be made to do the final posting by 15:00 on Wednesday prior to the bid opening.

Question=If the block is to be splitface one side, at the pilasters do you want the splitface on the inside of the pilaster adjacent to the non-splitface side of the wall so that the pilaster face on the back of the wall is smooth?

Question=The posts for the glass panels will need to be embedded into the block which conflicts with the bond beam. Please provide a detail to accommodate this situation.

Question=The note on plan sheet SW-27 states “EMBEDMENT FOR GLASS PANEL POSTS TO BE DETERMINED BY THE ENGINEER.” Does this refer to The Deputy Director Transportation Engineering or does it refer to the designer of the glass system? If it refers to the Caltrans Engineer, will the Engineer make that determination and provide details prior to the bid?

  • In accordance to section 1?1.18  Engineer, of the 1999 Standard Specification "The Chief Engineer, Department of Transportation, acting either directly or through properly authorized agents, the agents acting within the scope of the particular duties delegated to them." In this case the agent whom the duties are deligated to is the Resident Engineer. In reference to bidder's inquiry no. 4, the posts for the glass panels are not designed to be embeded into the  blocks so the note is in error.

Question=The specifications call for glass panels with a 15 mm thickness. Glass is not manufactured in metric sizes. The two nearest standard glass sizes to 15 mm is ½” and ¾”. All others would be special order. Please indicate what equivalent size (in inches) Caltrans wants to match the 15 mm call-out.
 

  • 15 mm would be equivalent to 1/2".
