Question=We question the applicability of the tapered notched wedge spec and joint compaction requirement on a ramp rehab job. In the hidden text on your web site for standard special provisions, spec writers are instructed "The tapered notched wedge option for longitudinal joints may be allowed for divided highways with asphalt concrete thicker than 45mm. This would indicate that they don't expect it to be used on ramp mill and paves.We request that this spec be eliminated from the contract by addenda. 

• The contract does not mandate the use of "tapered notched wedge" and is an option to the contractor, where applicable. Therefore, elimination of this spec. from the contract is incosequential. 

Question=Has the spec. for adhesive changed? It appears somewhat different than any I've seen before and is not the same as shown in my Std. Spec. book.. I am not aware of any new material being required, But Thought I should check.
 

• The adhesive for this contract is not the same as required per the Standard Specifications dated July 1999. The adhesive required under this contract is for Pavement Markers-Recessed. 

Question=With respect to your answer to inquiry #1, since you say the joint spec is optional, is the compaction spec for the joints optional also? They seems to be tied together and niether one is applicable for this type of work. 
 

• Should the "tapered notched wedge" apply and the contractor opts to use this method, the compaction test at the"tapered notched wedge" is mandatory.

Question=Removal depth for new asphalt section is deeper than existing asphalt and will require removal of portion of aggregate base. what grading and / or compaction requirements and tests will be required prior to placement of new asphalt? If Caltrans performs compaction tests, will results be available onsite immediately?

• This contract does not require placement of Aggregate base. Therefore, aggregate base requirements  do not apply. However, requirements for subgrade as described in  contract documents for Asphalt Concrete do apply.

Question=I am confused by your response to question #4.  Is Caltrans going
to perform compaction testing of exposed grade after removal of existing
asphalt and portion of Aggregate Base and prior to installation of new
asphalt?
 

• Should the method of removal of the AC and partial Base stratum, chosen by the contractor not cause a disturbance to the remaind Base stratum, no compaction test would be required. Should the remained substratum be disturbed, due to the removal method or inattention (Dependant on the extent of the disturbance), it is the responsibility of the contractor to recompact the class II base and test for proper compaction, prior to placement of any AC. Contractor is responsible for quality control and the State quality assurance.
