Caltrans District 11 Construction Department has developed this method of answering Bidder's Inquiries to better serve the needs of the Contractors who bid on our Projects. Caltrans District 11 Construction Department will post all of the questions submitted by any of the contractors that are registered Planholders for that Contract, but reserves the right to not answer any questions deemed unsatisfactory for public viewing.
The BIDDER'S INQUIRIES & RESPONSES will be updated continuously and all attempts will be made to do the final posting by 15:00 on Wednesday prior to the bid opening.

Where can we obtain a copy of the permit referred to in the Specials?

  • The Self-Certifying Nationwide 404 Permit is included in the Materials Information mailed to plan holders and copies are also available at our office. 
25. Structural Discharges. Discharges of material such as concrete, sand, rock, etc. into tightly sealed forms or cells where the material will be used as a structural member for standard pile supported structures, such as bridges, transmission line footings, and walkways or for general navigation, such as mooring cells, including the excavation of bottom material from within the form prior to the discharge of concrete, sand, rock, etc. This NWP does not authorize filled structural members that would support buildings, homes, parking areas, storage areas and other such structures. Housepads or other building pads are also not included in this NWP. The structure itself may require a Section 10 permit if located in navigable waters of the United States. (Section 404) 
  • On page 40 of the Materials Information Brochure there is a cover letter with dates that are expired, the valid pemit number is #95-20183 with expiration 2-11-02 which will be extended by the State at that time. The actual permit conditions 33 CFR part 330 starts on page 73 and is also available on the website for the U.S. Army Corps Of Engineers: http://www.usace.army.mil/inet/functions/cw/cecwo/reg/33cfr330.htm

RW1 Log of Test Borings shows an at grade elevation of 307.239 for B2-196 and 306.172 for B1-196.  The note at the bottom of the page indicates a datum elevation of 304.800. What are the actual original grade elevations of borings B1 and B2-196?

The typical Section for "RW1" calls for foundation treatment based on the design cut height;
0.305 for wall heights < 2.400
0.610 for wall heights > 2.400 
What treatment depth is required for wall heights equal to 2.400?

  • For wall heights equal to 2.400 use 0.305.

The wall thickness of the pipe specified  in the standard plan for C 400 and C625 Alt.V being only 6.35mm will never drive at the specified depth or length. Is it the contractor's  responsibility to make it work and provide a proper wall thickness that can be  driven? 

  •   Bid it as the item is shown in the Special Provisions Engineer's Estimate.
