Southbound SR-163 Closed for Work This Wednesday and Thursday Nights

A full freeway closure is planned on southbound State Route 163 (SR-163) this Wednesday and Thursday nights, starting at 10:30 until 5 the next morning from Interstate 8 (I-8) to the Cabrillo Bridge (Laurel Street Overcrossing), including the westbound and eastbound I-8 connector ramps to southbound SR-163.  The following ramps to southbound SR-163 will also be closed:  Robinson Avenue on-ramp, Washington Street on- and off-ramps, and the University Avenue off-ramp.

The closure is needed so workers can modify the concrete barrier in an attempt to increase traffic flow along the Park Boulevard/ Interstate 5 (I-5) connectors.  Detour signs have been placed in advance of the closure to assist motorists.

Caltrans placed concrete barriers along the shoulder of northbound SR-163 in the vicinity of the bridge and along southbound SR-163 narrowing the connector to Park Boulevard and southbound I-5 to allow contractor vehicles safe access to the work zone.   Although motorist access to Park Boulevard and southbound I-5 is uninterrupted, drivers tend to slow down in reaction to the narrowed ramp.

Periodic sidewalk closures along the Laurel Street bridge deck will begin this week through January so that crews can access the inside of the bridge to remove old wood.   The sidewalk will be closed one side at a time with signs placed alerting pedestrians to use the open sidewalk.

Access across the bridge will be limited to pedestrian and bicyclists on Jan. 2 through April 30.  Vehicles will not be allowed across the bridge during that time.  Caltrans will also occasionally implement late night lane closures along SR-163.  Notices for both traffic control efforts will be placed on routes leading to the work site well in advance of any closure.

Caltrans continues to work closely with the city of San Diego regarding public outreach efforts.  A Construction Bulletin will be issued to stakeholders monthly and as needed for special updates.  More information about the project may be found at www.dot.ca.gov/dist11.
