Q: How many lanes will be added to the existing freeway?

A: At its widest point it will be 23 lanes wide. In general, 4 new lanes will be added in each direction. Use this map to see how many lanes will be open in each direction.

Q: How long will this project take?

A: The entire construction project should be complete by Spring 2007. However, northbound lanes should be open to traffic in the Summer 2005.

Q: Will the freeway be closed during construction?

A: During construction no lanes will be closed during the commute times, and no long-term major detours will be needed. There will be a few nights one of the freeways maybe closed for bridge work. Advanced notification of the detour will be posted in advance of the work.

Q: Will on/off-ramps be affected during construction?

A: Yes, at various stages of construction some of the on/off-ramps will be affected. Information signs and detours will be posted before any scheduled closure. Information on all major closures and detours can be found on the construction bulletin page on this site. No closures will take place during peak commute hours.

Q: Will the surrounding city streets be affected during construction?

A: Yes, the local streets within the limits of the project will be impacted. No permanent closures will take place. Information signs will be posted ahead of time and construction bulletins will delivered to affected residents and businesses. All construction bulletins affecting the I-5/I-805 project will be posted on this site.

Q: How much will this project cost?

A: The total price tag of the project is $182 million, including construction cost of $109 million. This project also includes $25 million from Governor Gray Davis' Traffic Congestion Relief Program.
