CALTRANS BEGINS WEEKEND CLOSURES OF THE LONG BEACH FREEWAY (I-710)

LONG BEACH – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will begin a series of ten 55-hour weekend closures of the Long Beach Freeway (I-710) on Friday, March 28, weather permitting.
The closures are necessary to facilitate a 2.9-mile pavement rehabilitation project between Pacific Coast Highway (Route 1) and I-405. Started in March 2001, the $16.7 million project employs a new pavement material designed to last longer and require less maintenance. Completion of the project, which also includes replacing the metal median barriers with concrete barriers and widening the freeway shoulders, is scheduled for the fall of this year.
The closures will not be in effect Easter weekend, Memorial Day weekend or the weekend of the Long Beach Grand Prix. From Fridays at 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. Saturdays, and from 10 p.m. Sundays to 5 a.m. Mondays, a full freeway closure will be in effect. From 7 a.m. Saturday to 10 p.m. Sunday, two lanes of the freeway will be open in each direction. This innovative closure strategy, called the “freeway crossover,” involves closing one direction of the freeway to reconstruct the pavement while two lanes in each direction of traffic will be operating on the other half of the freeway. The lanes will be separated by moveable concrete barriers.
In addition, work continues on minor preparation and maintenance work for Phase III in both directions in preparation for repaving the mainline freeway lanes (in both directions) with new, longer lasting asphalt. All closures are subject to change. Additional planned closures include the following:
