   Storm Drain Litter Removal Program

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has established a proactive program to protect the environment. Caltrans has instituted a multi-year program in compliance with state water quality regulations, to reduce the amount of litter reaching the Los Angeles River and Ballona Creek from state highway storm drains. This

program targets a ten-percent annual reduction of litter which would otherwise pollute one of the most precious resources, water. Caltrans will retrofit its drainage system with Gross Solid Removal Devices (GSRD) to achieve this target. Reducing the

amount of litter entering storm drains will lead to improved water quality for everyone..Caltrans will begin installing GSRDs in fall 2006, which will remove trash from storm water runoff from state highways.

GSRDs will be installed on a yearly basis through 2013.A Caltrans initiated pilot study confirmed the effectiveness of the GSRDs in trapping litter.

These devices are located on the San Bernardino Freeway (I-10) in Rosemead and the Hollywood Freeway (SR-170) in Van Nuys. Based upon the successful pilot study, the GSRDs will trap litter within a mesh screen area of the drainage system. The system is encased in a concrete structure but has grate covers to allow
easy access so the trapped litter can be removed.

This will allow for the easy removal by Caltrans Maintenance crews.
Installation of the GSRD’s will take place away from freeway traffic. Adequate signage will be posted to alert motorists during construction. Impact to the motoring public will be minimal during installation.
