As a service to
local agencies, the Caltrans Local Assistance program
is an advocate for the cities and counties who use federal
and state funding to complete various street, road,
and bridge projects not on the State highway system
and within their local jurisdictions. Each of the 12
Caltrans Districts throughout the state has a Local
Assistance office.
Local Assistance,
coordinated by the Office of Local Programs in Sacramento,
ensures all federal and state funds designated for use
by local agencies (cities and counties) are used in
a timely, cost effective manner and for the purpose
it was intended. In addition, Local Assistance staff
works with local agencies to help them meet Federal
and State requirements consistent with social, economic
and environmental goals.
Through all 12 local
offices, Office of Local Programs in Sacramento, administers
over 25 different federal and state transportation funding
programs and coordinates with over 600 public agencies
to contribute approximately $1.2 billion annually to
the transportation system.
District 5 Local
Assistance provides services to local agencies in Monterey,
San Benito, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Santa
Cruz Counties. With a staff of nine, the District's
Local Assistance branch works in partnership with the
Regional Transportation Agencies (RTPA's) for each county
and serves as the primary point of contact for local
agencies; helping them with their federal or state funded
projects from project implementation to project completion.
