Inquiry #2: Part of the work in Stage 1 is to lower the vertical profile of Highway 20 between the frontage road and the roundabout, including reconstruction of the structural section as shown on the drawings. This reconstruction also includes part of the SW4 bypass lane. Because of this, it seems the work in this area of Stage 1 should be phased to show how traffic is being shifted while the road is being reconstructed, since we have to have a lane open in each direction at the end of each work day. The current traffic handling plans do not show any phasing of the work.

1. Can Caltrans provide details of phasing the work between the frontage road and the roundabout in Stage 1?
2. Will interim temporary striping be required to carry out the phasing?
3. Will additional k-rail be necessary to protect the sections being reconstructed in each phase?
4. Can the SW4 bypass lane be closed while we are reconstructing W1 814+11 to 821+50? Traffic can be sent to the existing intersection of Highways 20 and 53.

Response #2:
1- Your attention is directed to plan sheets TH-1 through TH-4, and TH-14. Alternate lowering the profile in the eastbound and westbound directions, not exceeding the maximum elevation difference of 0.15 foot between opposing traffic lanes. Elevation differences of greater than 0.15 foot would require Temporary Railing Type K between opposing lanes.
2- Your attention is directed to plan sheets TH-1 through TH-4, and TH-14. Traffic will be traveling on unpaved surface.
3- If required, Resident Engineer will request additional K-Rail and Crash Cushions to be installed.
4- Your attention is directed to Chart No. K1 in Standard Special Provisions for SW-4 closure (night time closure).

Inquiry #3: The section of highway to get 1' of lime treatment is within an area where there is one lane in each direction. Standard Spec Section 24-2.03A says that from the application of lime to 3 days after the application of curing treatment, only equipment and vehicles essential to the lime stabilization work are allowed on the lime stabilized soil. Reversible traffic control is only allowed for 9 hours at night per Chart K1. Is Caltrans going to allow traffic to run on the lime stabilized soil during all hours while the lime cures?
