Deputy District Director of Administration

A native Californian, Duncan McIntosh was appointed the Department of Transportation (Caltrans) District 7 Deputy District Director for Administration on January 1, 2009. This position oversees several areas of District business operations, including Budgets, Business Management and Skills Development.

Duncan McIntosh has served District 7 in the creative field for most of his 28 years of civil service. Starting as a Junior Engineering Technician in 1980, McIntosh brings a different perspective to the traditional engineering organization. Trained in fine arts at Humboldt and Long Beach State Universities, McIntosh used his training to deliver award winning services to Caltrans, Governors Wilson, Davis and Schwarzenegger, as well as other State departments, offices and agencies.

Over the years, he deployed or has been involved in introducing new technology, some with statewide application, to the Department. McIntosh brought the first desktop computers into the Graphics Services Unit in 1989. Then he partnered with Caltrans’ Sacramento Headquarters to test drive video teleconferencing and later became a pioneer in developing the Department’s Internet presence. All of these have blossomed and become commonplace technologies used to improve efficiencies and communication throughout State government.

Supervising with autonomy since 1989, McIntosh demonstrates strong leadership skills and the ability to develop lasting high level partnerships. He continues a focus on innovative new technology to improve business processes, efficiencies and customer service.
