29 Hawk Beacons Proj

Project Overview The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has installed new Pedestrian Hybrid Beacons also known as the High Intensity Activated Crosswalk (HAWK) System on State Route 29/Sonoma Boulevard (SR-29) in Vallejo.

Beacon Locations The new beacons have been installed at four intersections along SR-29 which are located at:

  • SR-29/Sonoma Blvd and Illinois Street
  • SR-29/Sonoma Blvd and Alabama Street
  • SR-29/Sonoma Blvd and Ohio Street
  • SR-29/Sonoma Blvd and Capitol Street
How do they work? Unlike traditional traffic signal lights, pedestrians can activate the new beacons by pressing a button before entering a crosswalk. After activation, the beacons flash yellow, turn solid yellow, then turn solid red to alert motorists to stop at the crosswalk. Unlike traffic signal lights, after allowing enough time for pedestrians to cross, the HAWK beacons turn completely off instead of turning green. This allows traffic to flow along the street when no pedestrians are present.

Project Benefits
The HAWK beacons improve safety on high volume highways that also function as city streets.
