Weekend Tragedy May Have Involved Drinking and Driving

SAN DIEGO—Caltrans officials expressed sympathies to the families and friends of four event goers who were killed and those who were injured in Chicano Park Saturday afternoon when a solo vehicle drove over the side of the northbound I-5/westbound connector ramp to the San Diego-Coronado Bridge and onto the crowd below.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the driver survived and was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Caltrans District Director Berman said, “There are no words to describe the loss and pain of family and friends of the four people that died and the many injured as result of the driver’s bad decision.”

The bridge was inspected prior to reopening late Saturday evening and determined to be structurally sound.

The incident is under investigation by the CHP Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team. Caltrans will take further action as recommended by the investigation report.
